Barbara A. Doughty

Barbara A. Doughty, 83 of Fishers, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021.  Barbara was born September 1, 1937 in Millville, IN to the late Carl and Dorothy Stohler.

Barbara, or “Barb” as she was known to her friends, graduated from Hagerstown High School in Hagerstown, IN.  As a cheerleader, her stunning good looks caught the eye of an upperclassman and her future husband, Smitty. They were married in 1956 and spent the next 64 years together until Smitty’s passing in 2020.

Barb’s professional career was in accounting and payroll.  She worked for several companies throughout her career including Perfect Circle, Indiana Insurance and The Indianapolis Racquet Club.

Barb had a true love for life.  In May it was the Indianapolis 500.  In Fall, the Indianapolis Colts.  Winter brought IU basketball.  And, Summer found her where she was happiest, amongst the landscaping and flowers that she worked tirelessly to perfect.  Her love of travel took her to the mountains of Colorado, the beaches of Hilton Head, the islands of Hawaii and her favorite destination, Italy.  However, home was where her heart was. Her time with friends and family was precious and she couldn’t wait to host the next party or family gathering.  Her infectious smile, great food and, of course, a good glass of wine was always there to greet you. Tennis was her passion.  She could never put down the racquet and played consistently until her later years.

It is hard to sum up the life of such a wonderful person in only a few paragraphs, but for those that knew her best, she was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was gentle, kind and generous……always putting the needs of others before hers.   She was also tough and determined.  Her trademark line was always, “I am woman, hear me roar”.   Barb will be missed and never forgotten.

A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m Saturday, March 13, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road.

Barbara was the widow of Smith F. Doughty.  She is survived by her sons, Scott (wife, Lisa) and Brett (wife, Colette) Doughty; grandchildren, Allison and Matthew, Shea and Skye; sister, Mary Louise Adamson; brothers, Gale and Richard Stohler.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gene, Marvin and Francis.
