Avelina Soliven

Avelina passed away on August 13, 2024 at the age of 91 years.

 She was born on May 12, 1933 to the late Jose Obial Catignas and Lelis Abaño Catignas. She attended the Philippine Dental College and graduated with a degree in Doctor of Dental Medicine. After passing her board exams, she was self-employed until she was married to her first husband who fathered a daughter. 

 In 1970, she followed her second husband who emigrated earlier to the United States. In the beginning, she was the housewife who took care of him and their infant son. Eventually, she wanted to work and initially found short-term lab and quality control jobs from companies that both went out of business later. Then she worked at the Winona Memorial Hospital for 15 years running tests from all departments on evenings. When she was so stressed out, she quit and worked at a less stressful job helping others as a Women, Infants and Children (WIC) representative for the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County. 

 Avelina is survived by her husband Leopoldo Soliven, daughter Maria Lutgarda (Joaquin) Calleja, son Paul Patrick Soliven, grandchildren Jadelson Calleja, Jeniza Calleja, Aspen Estefania Soliven, great-grandson Zaphkiel Calleja, siblings Celia (Samuel) Buenafe, Rogy Catignas, Mila (Alberto) Cajilig, Zaida (Armando) Ysip, Marilyn (Arnel) Pascual and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her first husband Pedro Panday, M.D., brother Jose A. Catignas, Jr. and son Albert Michael Soliven.

 Funeral Mass will be held on August 21, 2024 at 10:30AM at Saint Michael Church, 3354 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46222 with visitation on August 20, 2024 from 4-8PM at Flanner Buchanan, Washington Park North, 2706 N. Kessler Blvd. W. Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228 with rosary services at 7PM. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donation be made to Saint Michael the Archangel Church.
