Athena Gianakos Wright, 95, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2021. A graduate of Shortridge High School and Butler University, Mrs. Wright served as a secretary for Congressman Charles Brownson in his Washington D.C. office and then for pioneering heart surgeon Harris B. Shumacker, Jr. back in Indianapolis. She was Treasurer of the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Women’s Alliance and a member of the Clowes Hall Opera Committee. After moving to North Carolina and then to Florida, she continued to be active in various groups such as the American Association of University Women and the American Business Women’s Association. When she returned to Indianapolis after the death of her husband, she enjoyed volunteering at the Holliday Park Nature Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Wright, her parents John and Stella Gianakos, her brother John Gianakos, and her brother-in-law Larry Albean. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bill Longest, her sisters Georgia Buchanan and Mary Albean, and her nephews and nieces Matt Albean (Karen), Bryan Hadin, Dave Albean (Sharon), Paul Gianakos (Cheri) and Lisa Gianakos as well as several great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday April 5th, at Flanner Buchanan–Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Ave. Indianapolis, from 11am-1pm with a funeral service at 1pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3500 West 106th Street, Carmel, Indiana 46032. If you are uncomfortable visiting, the family completely understands and appreciates your thoughts and prayers.
