Arthur Martin Schunk

Arthur Martin Schunk 94 of Indianapolis died February 5, 2017. Arthur was born on January 22, 1923 in Kenmore, NY to George M. Schunk & Edith (McGuire) Schunk. He graduated from Hutchinson-Central High School in Buffalo, NY where he earned a varsity letter in tennis. After High School, in the fall of 1941 Arthur was hired to work in the mail room at the Tonawanda Laboratory of The Linde Air Products Company, a Division of Union Carbide Corporation. In 1942 at the age of 19, Arthur enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and obtained a military leave of absence from Union Carbide, a corporation from which he would retire 45 years later. After initially working at HQMC in Arlington VA he joined the Headquarters Battalion of the First Provisional Marine Brigade before ending up in the newly formed 6th Marine Division where he was promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant.

Following the end of WWII Arthur returned to work at The Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation and enrolled in night classes at Bryant & Stratton Business Institute where he earned a Certificate of Accounting. At this same time, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve where he continued to serve for five more years.
On June 30, 1951 Arthur married Marjorie Ellen Chapin at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Buffalo, NY.
Arthur’s career with Union Carbide Corporation would take him to Speedway, IN, White Plains, NY and back to Indianapolis where he would retire after 45 years of service with Union Carbide. He worked as Manager of Recruiting and Employment before eventually becoming Contracts Manager. In 1985 the National Contract Management Association chose Arthur as Second Place recipient for the Blanche Witte Memorial Award for his work in value engineering change proposals (VECPs). His work in VECPs resulted in savings for the government of multiple millions of dollars as well as earning financial rewards for his employer.
Upon retiring, Arthur and Marjorie moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL where they continued to live for 24 years, being very active at Sacred Heart Church, before returning to Indianapolis in 2014. Arthur was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 65 years Marjorie (Chapin) Schunk; brothers George, James, Robert, Earl, and Thomas Schunk; and sister Rita Schunk.
Arthur is survived by brothers, Millard, and Edward; children, Arthur (Cynthia Egli) of Bloomington, MN, Michael (Kathy) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, David (Lisa) of Bloomington, IN, Mary (Jeff) Louden of Indianapolis, IN, Peter (Maile) of Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Lee, David, Susie, John, Christopher, Angelina, Marjorie; and great-grandchildren, Lisa, Lily, Anthony John (AJ), Jacob David (JD), Austin, and Andrew.
