Arthur “Art” David Lapadat, Sr. (6/11/1931-5/23/2022)
Loving husband, father, teacher and coach, Art lived life to the fullest on his own terms, helped raise nine children on a teacher’s salary, and impacted the lives of countless colleagues, students, and athletes during his nearly 50-year career.
Born in East Chicago, IN, to parents who immigrated from Romania, Art served in the Navy during the Korean War. After his service, he attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN, where he met Mary Angela Koers at a school dance. After they wed on August 1st, 1959, Art attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he obtained his teaching degree. Art and Angela settled in Hammond where Art began his teaching career in Gary, IN. The family moved to Indianapolis in 1969, where Art continued his teaching/coaching career at IPS schools 41 and 47. After retiring from IPS, Art held teaching and/or coaching positions with Washington High School, Speedway High School, and St. Michael Catholic School.
Art was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Julia, three half-siblings, and his beloved daughter Julianna Grace, with whom he has been reunited. Art is survived by his wife Angela, eight children, David, Mary (Tapolsky), Michael, Nicholas, Andrew, Stephen, Elizabeth, and Sarah, three daughters-in-law (Lorraine Lapadat, Wendy Warner-Lapadat, Melissa Lapadat), one son-in-law (Gilles Tapolsky), 19 grandchildren (Nathalie Tapolsky, Stephanie Tapolsky, Michael Stephen Lapadat, Arthur Lapadat III (A.D.), Sarahbeth Hyatt, Nichole Lapadat, Stanley Lapadat II, Matthieu Tapolsky, Caroline Lapadat, Stephen Lapadat II (Danny), Olivia Lapadat, Evelyn Lapadat, Sammy Lapadat, Matthew Hasler, Landon Lapadat, Delaney Lapadat, Peyton Romeril, Alyna Romeril, Gracelyn Marshall), one granddaughter-in-law (Alexis Lapadat), and 4 great-grandchildren (Bella Thomas, Eli Anderson-Werth, Auri Anderson-Werth, Stanley Lapadat III (Nicky)).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Roch Catholic Church (3600 S. Pennsylvania St.), preceded by a public viewing at St. Roch’s Church from 12:30-1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow the internment service at Calvary Cemetery.
