Annabelle Johnston-Hinkle, 83, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2018.
She was born on January 1, 1935 in Indianapolis to the late Marion and Dorothy (VanSickle) King. Annabelle graduated from Howe High School in 1953 where she met her future husband, Joe Johnston. They were united in marriage shortly after and resided for a time in Japan while Joe was stationed there, serving in the U.S. Army. They relocated to Indianapolis where Annabelle began work with the Peter Rabbit Nursery School, she worked as the Director for over 20 years. She also devoted many years of care as a nanny and helping to care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Annabelle was a longtime and dedicated member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. She loved singing in the choir, serving as the Kitchen Coordinator to help prepare meals for the church and Vacation Bible School, and decorating the church for special events and holidays. Annabelle was dedicated to the Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Third Phase Program, and Haitian Missions. She traveled to Haiti several times and worked to support the school, orphanage and hospital.
Annabelle is survived by her children, Kevin (Chris) Johnston, Matt Johnston, Maria (Dan) Hamrick; grandchildren, Sarah (Bryan) Gray, Andrew (Jennifer) Johnston, Tatum Hoopingarner, Jakob Johnston, Liam Johnston, Serenity Johnston; great-grandchildren, Meadow Gray, Brooklyn Gray, Georgia Gray, Honor Gray. Annabelle is also survived by her sister, Nan Coddington. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Don King, Varse King, Andy King; and grandson, Kaleb Johnston. Following the death of her first husband, Joe, who was the father of her 3 children, she went on to marry David Shanks, and then Bill Hinkle; both of whom also preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 1605 E 106th St, Indianapolis, IN 46280 from 10am – 12pm on Saturday, December 29, 2018 with a Celebration of Life to follow. Memorial contributions may be given to Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, directed to Haitian Missions or IHN.
