Ann Mccalla Anderson

September 15, 1926 — May 24, 2022

Indianapolis, Indiana

Ann McCalla Anderson, 95, passed away on May 24, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. Ann was born to Mattox Pickens McCalla and Elvira Brownlee Nickels McCalla in Greenwood, SC, on September 15, 1926. From the age of five, she was raised by her aunt Annie Nickels due to the sudden death of her father and permanent hospitalization of her mother diagnosed with tuberculosis. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and completed a dietetics degree in 1948 from Indiana University. During her work as a dietician for the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN, she met her future husband, Dr. John T. Anderson. They married in 1951 and raised their family in Indianapolis. Ann and John enjoyed the outdoors and vacationed on Tybee Island, GA, then at their own cottage on Lake Freeman in Monticello, IN, before retiring to their dream home on Lake Gaston, NC. Fishing, boating and water skiing were favorite activities. In Ann’s younger years, she enjoyed watching movies, horseback riding, playing trumpet, listening to music, dancing and visiting family. While raising her children, Ann worked a few years at Winona Hospital as a dietician. Later in life, she took lessons for piano, and in her 70s, Ann learned banjo and played on a banjo that John made for her. Above all, her faith and spending time with family were most important, and she enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Ann was preceded in death by John, her husband of 51 years, and her son Dr. Marc H. Anderson. She is survived by her daughter Annette (Michael) Quebe, daughter-in-love Marian Anderson, daughters Jane and Teena Anderson, son Matt (Karol) Anderson, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren Rob (Emily), Lincoln, Owen, Mary Alice and Jamie Anderson; Kay (Gearin), Maddox and Cora Green; Lauren (Jeff), Ophelia and Anders Schmidt; Jen Anderson; Ben (Heather) and Layla Quebe; Sam (Heather) and Waylon Quebe; and Sarah Quebe; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends.

Ann and her family appreciate the attentive care she received from Transitions Hospice during the last few months.
