Anita Johnson

Anita Johnson, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died on Friday, April 29, 2022, at I.U. North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana. Mrs. Johnson was born Anita Sue Thompson in 1937, to the late Ronald M. and Altha Thompson of West Lafayette, Indiana. She was a graduate of Lafayette Jeff High School and received her Associate’s Degree in dental hygiene from Indiana University in Indianapolis. It was during her training that she met Earl H. Johnson, whom she married in 1957.

Mrs. Johnson was a dedicated community volunteer. She served countless young people as a Girl Scout Leader, a member of Day Nursery (now Early Learning Indiana), as an enthusiastic softball coach, and as the first and only female President of the Allisonville Little League. A longtime member of the Junior League of Indianapolis, Anita served as editor of JLI’s publication, “Pen & Inklings.” Anita had a keen mind for bookkeeping, which she put to work as JLI’s Treasurer, and for numerous other local organizations, including the Women’s Auxiliary of the Indiana State Medical Association.

Anita’s friends and family remember her as an animated woman who was a lot of fun and outstanding at everything she did, whether it was endless needlework and knitting projects, bowling, golfing, gardening, or playing Bridge; commenting that she was exceptional at the game. Later in life, she was a breeder and trainer of champion German Shorthaired Pointers, all of which were her beloved pets. Her nine grandchildren remember her as a grandma who enjoyed puzzles and games, digging in the dirt, baking cookies, serving root beer floats, and hosting lively Sunday family dinners.

Anita is survived by her husband of 65 years, Earl H. Johnson.   They shared many golf outings, travel, and fishing trips, but most importantly they together raised four accomplished children. Anita is also survived by her four children:  Earl Ronald Johnson (Daiva) of Austin, TX; Anne Louise Johnson of Auburn, CA; Beth Elaine Harvey (William) of Carmel, IN; and Eric Daniel Johnson (Susan Bizzell) of New Albany, IN.  She is also survived by her grandchildren: Aura B. Johnson; Charles Quinn Lowe; Maxwell Hunt and Tobias Solomon Winkler; William Andrew, Phoebe Cirrelda, Claudia Correll, and Philip Ronald Harvey; and Skyler Johnson.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm with Celebration of Life immediately following at 1:30 pm.  Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250.
