Alyce Idabelle Buchanan Sharp Lancet was born on September 17, 1928 in Indianapolis and passed away on November 8, 2019 at her home at Hoosier Village Retirement Community. She was 91 years old.
A devout Christian all her life, Alyce gave more than she took. She was a child of the depression and grew up poor. And, although she had learned to be thrifty, she was extremely generous with her time and her love. Guests were always welcome at her table. When her children would ask if a friend could stay for dinner, she would say, “I’ll just add another potato to the pot”. She had the most wonderful infectious laugh, often laughing to the point of tears. And, she was usually the butt of her own jokes. Alyce loved children – her own, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her students.
Alyce was the daughter of Wilbur and Marietta Buchanan. She was the third of seven children: one older brother and six sisters. The oldest, Vernon, was killed in WW2. The Buchanan family was pictured in Life Magazine featuring families who had lost loved ones in the war. Sisters include Frances (deceased), Jean (deceased), Lorry (living), Rosemary (deceased), Dorothy (living).
Alyce married Don Sharp, and they had four children Rex, Paul (Alice), Marcia (Paul), and Suzanna. She was a loving grandmother to six grandchildren: Seth, Kaleb, Dustin, Danny, Elaine, and Cally; and three great-grandchildren: Josie, Beckett and Wesley.
In 1968, the family moved from the Ravenswood area of Indianapolis to Northwood Hills in Carmel. The family attended Union Chapel Methodist church in the Nora area and later Church of the Saviour in Indianapolis.
Her husband, Don, died after a long battle with cancer in 1972. Alyce followed her lifelong dream of earning a teaching degree, followed by a Masters degree, becoming a reading specialist. Mrs. Sharp was a well-loved teacher of fourth grade at Mohawk Trails Elementary School in Carmel.
She then married long-time family friend, Richard (Dick) Lancet in 1979. They moved to a home they built at Heritage Lake in Putnam County where they spent many happy summers and enjoyed winters in Brooksville, Florida.
In the mid 1990’s, Alyce and Dick moved to Hoosier Village Retirement Community. She and Dick were members of Church of the Saviour and later became members and active volunteers at the Hoosier Village Chapel. Dick passed away in 2013 and Alyce stayed at their duplex at Hoosier Village, then at Hawthorn Hall, Hickory Hall Memory Unit and finally the Health Center where she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
She had a strong work ethic and determination, once she set her mind to a task she would not stop until it was accomplished. The way she worked at a factory job, while caring for her children and her bedridden husband, and at the same time attended college to earn her teaching degree was nothing short of Super Human.
Alyce will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral for Alyce will be held at the Chapel at Hoosier Village 9875 Cherryleaf Dr, Indianapolis, IN on Friday, November 15, 2019. Visitation from 10-11:00, followed by funeral at 11:00. She will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery immediately following.
