Allen Lee Simmonds, 76, passed away on February 28, 2021. He was born on August 22, 1944, in Plainfield Indiana, to the late Richard and Andra Simmonds.
Allen graduated from Plainfield High School, class of 1962. He avidly pursued higher education, attending University of Alabama, Butler University, IUPUI, where he completed his bachelor’s degree, John’s Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and Syracuse University, where he earned his Masters in Economics. Allen is also a veteran, having served in the Army during the Vietnam war.
Allen unabashedly pursued variety in life. He traveled extensively, he lived in a lot of different places and wherever he went, he left new friends with stories to tell. He was a great cook, an accomplished pool player, a master gardener, an outdoorsman who loved to hike the Appalachian Mountains or mountain bike in Colorado. He was never without a book or three, and his favorite subject was World War Two. During his lifetime, he held many professions, including managing his parent’s steel fabricating company in Plainfield, tech support in the nascent computer field, chef, and economics professor.
Allen leaves behind a sister, Jennifer Simmonds; brother, Tony Simmonds; niece, Ashley Redlund; nephew, Nate Simmonds; stepdaughter, Alison Schmutzler; grandchildren, Aurora and Alexander; and loving wife, Susan Shipp Simmonds.
