Alice May Jones of Carmel, IN passed away on August 4, 2024. Born in Switz City, IN on January 12, 1937 to George Axe and Edith Edwards, she was one of 6 children. She looked up to her older sister, Juanita and thought of her four brothers like her own children. Family, friends, and Jesus were the centerpieces of Alice’s entire life. She remained close with childhood friends throughout her entire life, loved being a mother, and adored all of her grandchildren. She was an active member of Hazel Dell Christian Church and formed several lasting friendships there. She loved getting together with her Sunday School group, either for study or fellowship.
Alice cared for others in ways most people just don’t think about. If she visited a friend in a nursing home, she was likely to stop and visit with someone else that didn’t have a visitor that day. If the neighbor had been too busy to cut his grass, she would do it for him. You couldn’t visit without having a snack, a meal, or playing cards. If she knew you or she heard your name in passing, you can bet you were on her prayer list. She was thoughtful, fun, and made everyone feel special.
She drove a school bus for Carmel Clay schools and the children thought of her as their grandma too. She loved driving children to school. She also loved the family of fellow bus drivers, often hosting cook outs, pool parties, and Christmas parties for the group. She bowled on a bowling league at Woodland Bowl for several years and consistently bowled a perfect game on Wii bowling when she played with her great-grandchildren.
On March 19, 1977, Alice married Earl Jones and they spent 47 wonderful years together. They watched their children start families, traveled together, enjoyed their grandchildren, spent summers in their pool with friends and family, hosted countless get togethers, and watched their grandchildren grow up and start families of their own.
Alice is survived by her husband, Earl, children Tom (Kim) Padgett, Jerry (Karen) Padgett, Kelly (Steve) Spradley, and Julie Jones Hofsommer; daughter-in-law Sandy Jones; grandchildren, Lisa (Rick) Bovenizer, Kristen (Matt) Wells, Nathaniel (Samantha) Padgett, Katie Padgett, Ashley (Chun) Davidson-Lam, Kellina (Ary) Avnet, and Lauren (Brandon) Spradley-Collins; great-grandchildren, Luke Bovenizer, Hudson and Sawyer Wells, Paige Hardman, Alice and Zoe Padgett, Ellis Lam, and Vivienne and Isabelle Avnet; sister Juanita Emery; sisters-in-law Bonnie Edwards, Linda Edwards, and Diane Edwards.
Alice was preceded in death by son Michael Jones; grandson Andrew Padgett, her parents, George and Edith; her brothers, David Edwards, Curt Edwards, Leonard Edwards, and Leland Edwards.
