Alice "Diane" Mckamey

January 16, 1938 — September 1, 2020

Glendale, AZ

Alice Diane McKamey, 82, died Tuesday, September 1, 2020 in Glendale, AZ.

She leaves her son, Kevin McKamey and wife Darla (Phoenix, AZ); her daughter, Dawn (McKamey) Gentry and husband Harold (Omaha, NE); her son, Darrin McKamey and wife Allison (Lawrenceburg, TN); 1 brother, Larry Johnson and wife Nan; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Herchel McKamey in November 2019; a brother, Edward Johnson; and a great-granddaughter, Isla Gentry, in August 2020.

Mrs. McKamey was born in Greencastle, IN, the daughter of Victor and Clara (Moore) Johnson. She graduated from Cloverdale High School in 1955 where she enjoyed glee club and drama activities. Diane met her husband there and they were married September 13, 1958 at the Cloverdale Church of Christ. She took business classes at Cumberland College (now University) in Lebanon, TN and worked as a secretary at Indianapolis Christian School for several years. But Diane’s primary investment was in support of her husband’s ministry, her care of her family, and her volunteer work with churches throughout the Midwest.

Diane served various churches of Christ in Anderson, IN, Lebanon, TN, Indianapolis, IN, Valparaiso, IN and Fort Wayne, IN. She loved teaching young children in Bible class, often making up her own songs to reinforce the lesson. Diane excelled in entertaining the youngest toddlers with songs about the Bible, knowing that they were learning every word and absorbing the love of Jesus. She also taught many ladies’ classes and encouraged younger moms in word and example.

Diane also excelled in hospitality to both friends and strangers. She loved to cook and host other families in their home, both for meals and for extended stays. Even after her husband retired from “paid” ministry, Diane and Herchel often spent time making pastoral visits to elderly people who were home-bound.

Favorite family memories include the Hawaii trip of 2007; Christmas/New Year’s celebrations with dozens of cookie varieties, mountains of mashed potatoes, and enough ham and turkey to feed the foreign legion; grandkid gifts including chapstick and lotion; making up poems and scavenger hunts to find gifts; reading stories and singing silly songs together; playing games when Grams made sure we all kept the rules straight; and of course, “tweekers”. Diane McKamey will always be remembered by the grandkids as “Grams” and their wonderful memories of her will remain in their hearts forever.

Mrs. McKamey’s family wish you to know how much they appreciate your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time. A funeral service will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Flanner Buchanan- Washington Park East with visitation 12:30-2:00 pm prior to services.
