Emblem

Alexander Gray was born in Bitola, Macedonia on May 21, 1927. He came to the United States with his mother, Patricia on the Queen Mary at age 12. He joined the US Navy at age 17 and served in the Navy during WWII, making him one of the war's oldest survivors.

After the war, he went to the University of Rochester and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Alex worked on many intricate projects both for himself and the companies he served, including helicopters and jet boats.

At school he met and married his wife Ruth who was a music teacher in Rochester, NY. Both of his children majored in Music at Indiana University. Although he had hoped at one point to be a professional quality musician, he found much joy in the talents of his children.

Not surprisingly, his retirement hobby was learning to fly gliders, eventually reaching the highest level of achievement in which he could teach and/or open his own school. But retirement was not enough for his very active mind! He went back to work, mostly as a marketing/engineering consultant. In 1990 Alex established his own engineering/marketing company and worked for IPTS until December 2024-- yes, 2024!!

Something he dearly enjoyed during his "retirement" was mentoring and tutoring young children, especially in English and math.

Alex was a Christian man who made generous contributions to his church and also individuals we may never know about. One example is the purchase of a lovely piano for his church.

This 97 year old man (97 being quite an accomplishment in itself) worked very hard to maintain his health for many years in spite of his medical issues. He will be missed greatly by his colleagues, church friends, neighborhood friends, and especially by his daughter, Janet.

He is survived by daughter, Janet Alexander, of Evanston, Illinois. He is preceded in passing by wife, Ruth M. Gray, and son, Mark A. Gray.
