William F. Fischer, age 94, passed away May 30, 2019 in Avon, IN. He was the beloved widower of Rhea. They had been married for 68 years. He had two sons, William (Paula) of Indianapolis, and Mark (Renee) of Debary, FL. He was grandfather to Jackie Jackson, Shauna Lyons, Andrew Fischer, Erin Journay, and Sarah Pierson and had ten great grandchildren.
He was a WWII veteran who served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, on D Day+1 disembarking from the sinking ship, Susan B. Anthony. He was able to go on 2014 Honor Flight and participate in many activities through the Honor Flight where WWII veterans were honored. He always said he was participating “for the boys who didn’t make it home”.
Bill was a very talented man who enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Rhea would find pictures of furniture she liked and he would build it—without plans! He often said, “We weren’t afraid to try anything. We just did it”.
He loved travelling in the “Folly” with his wife throughout the country. He planned their 50th anniversary in Edinburgh, Scotland at St. Giles Cathedral, where they renewed their vows. They enjoyed travelling in Ireland and Wales, as well.
He was a quiet man, with a gentle demeanor, a positive outlook, and a good sense of humor.
He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
