Walter Ray McDonald, 80, of Greenfield, passed away at home on Thursday, November 23, 2017.
He was born on February 28, 1937 in Indianapolis to the late Covert and Hortense (Jenkins) McDonald. Walt attended Broad Ripple High School and graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1954. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and following his discharge Walt sold life insurance for Sun Life and soon began work as a Pipe Insulator for the Asbestos Union, Local 18. He was active in the Millersville Masonic Lodge 126, Scottish Rite, Shriners and the American Legion. Walt was a Cubs fan, and enjoyed cheering on the Colts, especially his favorite former player, Peyton Manning. Walt also liked to watch Butler and Indiana University Basketball games. He was well known for his Super Bowl beef stew and could always be found behind the grill at the family’s Indy 500 parties. Walt was a humble and generous man who will be missed by all who knew him.
Family was most important to Walt. If you were a friend, you were family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Deen (Bowsher) McDonald; children, Debra (Mike) Bozymski and Mike (Teresa) McDonald; grandchildren, Kevin, Danielle and Brian Bozymski. Walt is also survived by his sister, Jeannette Warren; brothers-in-law, Robert and Donnie Bowsher; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Metzger and Jeanie Nye. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 4 brothers, Bobby, John, Bill and Dick McDonald.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East from 5-9pm. Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 11am, with additional visitation 1 hour prior, all at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be given to Local 18, Millersville Masonic Lodge or the Shriners. Friends are invited to leave online condolences for the family at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
