Sung Sook “Susie” Yahng (nee Yeu) passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the age of 83. She was a wonderful mother who was very loved and will be missed.
Sung Sook was born in Gimcheon, South Korea on May 24, 1939. In 1967, she left Seoul, her parents, and 7 siblings to move to America with her husband and 1 year old son to pursue a new adventure. Susie brought her Christian values and together with 5 other Korean families, in 1971, founded a Korean church in Indianapolis, IN. She also originated the Korean Society of Indianapolis, as well as a Korean language school to promote Korean culture and teach the next generation.
Susie was a dedicated, selfless and loving mother, who had many interests. She enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband and offered her time to entertain residents at local healthcare facilities. Piano, singing, tennis, and golf (she got a hole in one!), were also many of her favorite pastimes. Traveling the world was one of Susie’s lifelong dreams that she was able to fulfill. But, she also enjoyed just spending time with her friends in the Korean community, talking, laughing, and “shi-shendi”. She excelled at needlecraft and made beautiful hand-made garments for her family. Susie’s unparalleled Korean cooking talent provided her family with delicious Korean meals proving what a giving person she was. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She will be remembered by the name her oldest grandson first called her, “Halmee”, a toddlerized version of Halmunee.
Susie is survived by her husband of 58 years, John. Her son, Charles (Amanda), and her two daughters Caroline (Joseph Pieters) and Catharine; grandchildren Evan, Juhea, Serena, and Noah.
