Stephen Mullen
December 30, 1939 – July 9, 2019
Stephen “Steve” Mullen, 79, of Noblesville, IN, died peacefully in his sleep on July 9, 2019. Born in Indianapolis, IN, on December 30, 1939, he was the son of Roxie (Fleener) and Ivan Mullen. Starting at an early age, he worked with his father’s livestock trucking company, and learned well the livestock procurement business. After graduating from Southport HS in 1957, he went to work as a livestock buyer for Stark & Wetzel in Indianapolis, and then in Frankfort. He was later the first manager of the Hoosier Stockyards branch in New Market. In the late ’60s, he and his wife Carolyn (Sauer) were the proprietors of C&S Grocery in New Market, and he went back to the livestock business with Wilson Foods in their Logansport plant, and then their Fischer Packing Company subsidiary in Louisville, KY, becoming the head livestock buyer. After leaving Fischer’s, he was a buyer for Producer’s Livestock in Columbus, Ohio. He was also a realtor for Coldwell Banker in Westerville, Ohio. During his career, especially in Louisville, he became quite well respected on the fair circuit as a judge of hogs, and could accurately and fairly predict the quality of the meat while the animal was being shown.
He met the love of his life, Carolyn Sauer, at a Methodist church in Southport, and they were wed on August 13, 1960, spending nearly 59 years in bliss. In their last bedroom, they had painted over the headboard, “C & S – Always kiss me goodnight”. Together they raised three children – Roger (Joy) of Pittsfield, MA; Jennifer (Timothy) Ludlam of Carmel, IN; and Julie (Bryan) Griffaw of Liberty Township, OH.
In his later years, he became a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his sisters Portia Burton of Porter, IN and Connie (Paul) Surface of Waveland, IN; his three children; and grandchildren Bethany (Robert) Turriff, Faith Griffaw, Jacob Mullen, Holtz Ludlam, Benton Griffaw, and Celia Griffaw, and great-granddaughter Grace Turriff, and many beloved nieces and a nephew. Besides, his parents, he was pre-deceased by one grandson, Colin Griffaw.
