SISTER MARY ANNSCHUMANN

SisterMary Ann Schumann, 79, passed peacefully away on January 29, 2016 at St.Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis, IN. Shetouched very many lives in so many ways. She especially encouraged love forJesus in the Eucharist and her devotion to Divine Mercy.

She wasborn January 19, 1937 in Kinross, Iowa. The first daughter of Edward J.and Marjorie H. Schumann, she is preceded in death by her parents, and brotherTom Schumann. Surviving brothers include Donald (Mary Ellen) Schumann ofAnabel, MO, and John (Nancy) Schumann of Cairo, MO. Surviving sisters areMartha Schumann of Columbia, MO, Helen Susan (Raymond) Skinner of Cairo, MO, TheresaAngela (Dan) Urenda of Wichita, KS, and Cindy (Ed) Roth of Cairo, MO inaddition to numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Sister MaryAnn joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville, MO in 1953, and wasprofessed in 1956. She graduated from St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in 1960and worked at St. Anthony’s and in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

In 1970 SisterMary Ann left the Franciscan Order and spent a year with Project Hope in Tunis,Tunisia. Upon her return to the states, she enrolled at The College of Steubenville, nowknown as the Franciscan University of Steubenville Ohio.She earned a degree in Theology in1978.

Hernursing career brought her to Indianapolis where she worked fifteen years at WishardHospital, then in home health care, and even the infirmary at the PlainfieldCorrectional Facility. During this timeshe completed a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Care from Christian TheologicalSeminary in Indianapolis.

On September 14, 1989, through thedirect efforts of Sister Mary Ann and Monsignor Joseph Schaedel, the firstPerpetual Adoration Chapel in the Archdiocese opened. It was providentially named the Divine MercyChapel, and served as a model for eleven other chapels now open across thestate in Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Sister worked tirelessly for the next twenty-six years overseeing thechapel, inviting people to pray, and promoting Eucharistic Adoration wherevershe went.

On May 30, 2000, family and friends gathered in SS. Peterand Paul Cathedral to witness Sister Mary Ann's profession as an anchoress forthe Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Msgr. Joseph F. Schaedel, then serving as vicargeneral, presided at the Mass. The concelebrants were Father Tony Volz and thelate Father Noah Casey.

Sister Mary Ann’s total commitment to serving the local Churchbore much fruit, especially her promotion of the devotion to Jesus as theDivine Mercy. "Jesus I Trust in You" spread to the lips and hearts ofthousands. The annual Divine Mercy Sunday service that she initiated at St.Michael the Archangel Church drew record crowds.

Sister Mary Ann Schumann was a servant, mentor, teacher,spiritual director, and the face of Jesus to countless souls. We will miss herdearly…

Visitation willbe held Sunday, January 31 from 2-7 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan -WashingtonPark North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Dr.

Her funeral Masswill be will be celebrated on Monday, February 1 at 11:30 a.m. at St Luke’sCatholic Church, 7575Holliday Drive East. Entombmentwill follow at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery.
