Russell (Russ) Lee Slavens, 73, passed away on February 24, 2019 in Brownsburg, Indiana. A memorial service will be held at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral home on March 3, 2019 at 1pm.

Russ was born to Glenn Slavens and Adda Ross/Slavens/Waggoner on February 11, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a child Russ resided in Indianapolis.

On May 9, 1970, Russ married Deborah (Debbie) Darling. Debbie was primarily a stay at home who dedicated her life to raising their twin sons, Scott and Brian. Russ and Debbie made Brownsburg, Indiana their permanent home in 1971.

Russ served as an Army tank driver in the Vietnam War from November 18, 1965 to October 17, 1967. After returning from the war, Russ began his law enforcement career with the Indianapolis Police Department on February 10, 1969 and served for over 40 years.

Russ had two granddaughters: Olivia Starr Slavens of Danville, IN and Hayley Rene Slavens of Plainfield, IN. Russ’ later years were spent spoiling both girls and filling their lives with love.

Preceding Russ in death were his wife (Debbie Slavens), Father (Glen Slavens), Mother (Adda Ross/Slavens/Waggoner), Stepdad (George Waggoner), Sisters (Betty Starlin and Elizabeth Gilbert). His son and daughter in law Scott and Mindy, his son and daughter in law Brian and Erin, his granddaughters Olivia and Hayley and siblings Glenda Butcher, George Waggoner, Vickie George, Ricky Waggoner, Evelyn Donlan and Richard Waggoner survive him.

Those who wish to honor Russ through a monetary donation may do so through the American Cancer Society.

Viewing will be held Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 11am-1pm at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North 2706 Kessler Blvd West Dr Indianapolis, IN 46228. Funeral service will follow at 1:00pm.
