Roberta Jean Callahan (Hill), 77, passed away on July 20, 2023.
She was born January 10th, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas, to Robert Franklin Hill and Thelma Irene Bales.
Jean worked at a plastics company and a hospital before marrying Larry J Callahan on July 15, 1964 in Wichita, Kansas. Jean loved bowling and was asked to start a women’s league on Monday nights after moving to Oklahoma City. She found enough teams and sponsors to fill the entire bowling alley in her first attempt and the last she knew the league was still going strong.
Next the family was transferred to Indianapolis. She was a room mother for the elementary school. She also joined a group of older women in the neighborhood she called “the blue hairs”. She enjoyed their group outings and celebrations. Eventually she decided to go to work for Wayne Township Adult Education. She was there many years until she “retired”.
She loved pinochle immensely and eating every Tuesday night (Half Price Senior night) at the Waffle House. When not at Waffle House her and Larry would probably be found at Ryan’s or Ponderosa. She was a big animal lover. She loved her Dobermans Tasha and Ekko, the cats Sophie, Taboo and the “sissies” Jennifur, Yancy and Chloe and her Weimaraner Logan. Her newest kitty is Pebbles. She misses her mom no end.
Around 1974 or so she started doing genealogy because her father-in-law asked her to. She really was pretty good at it and was interested in it all her life. You could ask her anyone’s birthday or when they got married and if she wasn’t exactly right with the date, she was pretty close.
One of the highlights of her later life was a trip to London with her son. She had to actually get a Passport for that trip and it has only two stamps in it.
She was always a caring person. She always remembered birthdays and holidays with a card at least. And had many friends among the servers and managers of the various restaurants she frequented with her best friends Dave & Judy.
She is survived by her son, Michael Callahan, brother Charles Bales (Debbie), nieces Darla Larkin (Leo) and Michelle Carter, nephews Chris Callahan (Renee), Craig Callahan (Michele), Robert Callahan, Roger Callahan, many great nieces and nephews and also her dearest friends Dave & Judy Allen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Irene Faye Cox (Bales), husband Larry Callahan and brother-in-law Daniel Callahan.
