Richard Todd Doran, 80, passed peacefully on October 17, 2021, at his home in Westfield, IN. He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann (Ege), brother, William (Wendy), 6 children, 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Born to Thomas and Helen Doran in Queens, NY, on December 18, 1940, Rick spent part of his youth in the NY borough until his family moved to Long Island, NY. He attended St. Dominic’s Catholic high school and Fordham University, where he graduated with a degree in history. Through college Rick maintained a long-distance relationship with his high school sweetheart, Judy, who had begun her nursing school studies at Georgetown University. He took the train to Washington, DC, on weekends and worked part time as a tour guide at the Washington Monument to finance the frequent visits with his future wife.
They were engaged to be married on Christmas Eve, 1962. On September 14, 1963, Rick and Judy began their 58 year journey together, raising Chris (Sheila), Maribeth (Patrick Lynch), Kerrie (Rick Miller), Kim (Mark Kemna), Katie (Tim Barbour) and Brian (Wendy). As the family grew, Rick and Judy’s home was the gathering spot for pool parties, “Grandpa’s Easter Egg Hunts,” Christmas day celebrations and more. Rick’s legacy is the love for his family. Rick’s commitment to service and work showed at a very young age as he helped his grandfather at the family nursery, joined the staff at the USPS, assisted with inner-city park renovations, enrolled in the US Army ROTC program and served four years, where he rose to the rank of First Lieutenant and received an Army Commendation Medal in 1965.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Big Brothers Big Sisters board member, a Minister of the Eucharist at the family’s parishes, volunteer coach and neighborhood organizer of special events for families. Rick’s three-decade career with Allstate prompted family moves from NY to NJ, Illinois and Indiana. In 1994, Rick retired from corporate life and started People First Consultants, launching a 20-year path in leadership training, executive coaching and customer relationships. He published The 12 Steps to Customer Trust in 2008, which fulfilled a lifelong ambition to have something submitted to the US Library of Congress. The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice for their care and support over the last month.
Donations are encouraged to the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
