On November 27, 2022, Richard Otten, 78, passed away surrounded by his loving family in his home in Carmel, IN. Richard was born August 22, 1944, in Indianapolis to the late Claude and Lois Otten, one of four children. He attended Shortridge High School where he was in the marching band and was an Eagle Scout. Richard went on to graduate from Wabash College where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Following college, he completed his medical degree at Indiana University Medical School and became a family practice physician.
Richard served in the Navy for over 20 years, ultimately retiring from the Navy as a flight surgeon with the rank of Captain which included tours on the USS Guadalcanal and USS Kitty Hawk (Senior Medical Officer). Richard was a veteran of the Gulf War stationed in Bahrain.
Upon retirement from the Navy, Richard practiced medicine in Chula Vista, California before finally retiring from medicine and returning to Carmel, Indiana. His hobbies included travel, piano, outdoor activities and spending time with his family.
Family and friends are invited to gather Monday, December 5 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel, where a funeral service will begin at 12:00 pm. Burial to follow at Carmel Cemetery.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Maribeth, his four children, David (wife, Larissa), Dennis (wife, Amy), Richard Jr. and Kristen; three grandchildren, Emily, Matthew and Madelline; brothers, Carl (wife, Mattie) and Mark Otten; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his sister Claudia and her husband, Ron.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (IADRC).
