Rebecca R. Brewster

March 31, 1947 — April 6, 2023

Carmel, IN

Rebecca R. Brewster (Becky, Gigi, Mom), 76, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2023. She was born March 31, 1947, in Logan, West Virginia, to the late Howard and Alice Brewster. She was proud to have grown up in Amherstdale, West Virginia as the daughter of a coal miner. She attended Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education and married her late husband, Eugene Griffith. Before leaving West Virginia, Becky and Eugene welcomed twin boys Michael and Patrick Griffith. Becky moved to Indiana in 1975 where she raised her family and obtained a Masters of Science Degree in Education from Indiana University. She went on to have a distinguished career as a Licensed Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist focusing on addiction. She started her own private practice Brewster Counseling Services, in 1992 while teaching as a professor at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. She took a position as Director of the Nurturing Program at East Carolina University Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina and continued to see clients with her Cousin Beverly. Becky was always very adventurous, so it was not surprising she moved to Geissen Germany to work with adolescents at Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC).

Becky loved Blues music (especially Buddy Guy) and spending time with her family and friends with a breve latte in hand. She watched or read anything science fiction and espionage. She traveled the world with family and friends, especially Europe. She was the ringleader of all the talent shows at our annual Brewster family reunions at Seven Lakes, North Carolina, numerous Carolina beaches, and at the family compound “Kervansaray” in West Virginia. Becky was known for being the life of the party, having a great sense of humor and positive energy that brought out the best in others, and a profound ability to connect with everyone she met. She also was a master storyteller and strongly believed that every experience, good or bad, just provided you with the opportunity to have a great story! Her grandchildren remember her hosting Camp Gigi when they were younger and being picked up daily from middle school listening to her latest Sci-Fi stories and the most recent astronomy research. They always tried to correct her unique blend of Midwestern / West Virginia accented English when she’d intend to say words like “color”, but it sounded like “collar” and one syllable words always had two (her brother Bill was “Bee-ell”). Becky’s co-workers remember her as a guru psychotherapist and mentor. Her kids remember her influence in moving forward in positive ways even in the wake of hardships. She is truly missed.

Becky is survived by her sons and their wives, Michael Griffith, Patrick Griffith, Jessica Beer and Shannon Griffith, her siblings Bill Brewster and Nancy Caldwell, her grandchildren Georgia Griffith, Wyatt Griffith, Jovon Griffith, and Connor Post, and her immediate extended family Beverly Sheaffer, Logan Sheaffer, and Kris Dougherty.
