Rashid was tragically taken from us suddenly on Thursday, September 29, 2022 in an auto accident. His family and friends are heartbroken, devasted. Rashid was loved by his family, friends, and anyone he interacted with. He was the heart of his family, and he will always remain in our hearts.
Rashid was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone on January 1, 2000. He was preceded in death by his birth mother, Adama Conteh, who died in Sierra Leone when Rashid was two years old. It was the honor of their lives for Swaray Conteh, Adama’s brother, and his wife, Beth Pope, to become Rashid’s parents at age 3 and for Nelson Conteh to be Rashid’s brother. Rashid attended New Augusta South Elementary School, Tindley Academy for 6th grade, Creekside Middle School for 7th and 8th grade, and graduated from Carmel High School in 2018. He had worked and taken college classes, and was scheduled to complete his Associates degree in Healthcare Specialist at Ivy Tech Community College in December 2022. He had worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and most recently was employed at IU North as a Food Services Ambassador and Team Leader. He intended to apply to nursing schools next year and become a Registered Nurse. He had the heart and warmth for healthcare, always a smile and a helping hand to anyone he met.
Rashid was a son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend to so many. His smile lit up any room he entered. He was empathetic, compassionate, and kind. He loved music and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by many family members, including parents, Swaray Conteh and Beth Pope; brother, Nelson Conteh; sister, Esther Niyaka Conteh; grandparents Bob and Linda Pope, aunts Satta Conteh, Sama Conteh, Yarboh Conteh, and Aurora Pope; uncles James Mansaray, Brima Conteh, Momoh Conteh, Okon Ifon, Brian Pope and Todd Pope; cousins Matthew Pope, Michael Pope, Kevin Pope, Mariama Conteh, Medma Bangura, Kadiatu Sankoh, Wayan Conteh, Edward Mansaray, Samba Sankoh, Briana Conteh, Salif Conteh, and cousins in Sierra Leone including among others, Mariama Mansaray, Alimamy Mansaray, Victor Mansaray, Kaday Mansaray, Augustine Mansaray, and Bakar Mansaray; and nephew Elisha Idrissa.
His friends are too many to list, but they all know the love he had for them. Three close friends who will serve as pallbearers are David Chilemba, James Legg and Aaron Wallace. Rashid loved his friends and was loved in return. Some knew him as “RJ,” a nickname he received in middle school. Others in Sierra Leone, where he was born and lived until age 3, knew his as “J1,” which is the nickname he received due to his January 1st birthday.
The family of Rashid Conteh has established the Rashid S. Conteh Memorial Foundation. Donations can be made at any Chase Bank or via Zelle to [email protected]. Potential donors may also email this account to provide their contact information for a donor list and to receive other information on how to support the Foundation. As enough funds are raised, the Foundation will break ground on a healthcare facility in Rashid’s birth country of Sierra Leone, West Africa, as an ongoing memorial.
