Indianapolis, IN

Randall (Randy) Eugene Walter, 72, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023 in the morning hours as he was getting ready to leave for the weekly church service at Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Born on May 22, 1951 to Eugene C. and Geraldine M. Walter (Burns), his early years were spent in northern Indiana residing in Wanatah, Rolling Prairie and Michigan City.  Later, he moved with his family to central Indiana residing in Pendleton, Plainfield and Indianapolis.

He is survived by his mother, Geraldine (Jerrie) Walter Heyne (Burns), his sister, Laura Peeters (Heyne), nephews, Rob Peeters (Robyn) and Joey Peeters.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene C. Walter, his step-father, Robert P. Heyne and his brother, Robert P. Heyne, Jr.

Randy was a 1969 graduate of Plainfield High School and a 1973 graduate of Ball State University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning.

He was employed for over 40 years at the Indiana Department of Transportation where he worked on many important projects for Indiana’s highway system prior to his retirement.

Randy was dedicated to being a servant of God until his sudden passing.  He was a faithful caregiver for his mother, Jerrie.  Pilgrim Lutheran Church and its members were also the beneficiary of his kindness, helpfulness, and loyalty.  Randy served as an elder, worship committee member, stewardship committee member and usher, to name a few of his callings.  Very often, he was also the host of a coffee hour between services that encouraged fellowship with each other.  In addition, he was happy to introduce himself to any visitor to the church in the hopes of making them feel welcome.  Prior to joining Pilgrim, he was also a long-time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, in Indianapolis, where he was very involved serving in many capacities including President of the congregation and a volunteer for a program dedicated to inner city children called Son Seekers.

Randy had many fond memories of his trip to Europe through The London Center at Ball State.  He enjoyed viewing the amazing architecture and discovering the culture of the countries to which he traveled.  He was a history buff who recalled many people, dates and events to his family and friends’ amazement.  One of his most knowledgeable and enjoyable hobbies was the Royal Family of England.  He collected many books and magazines related to this institution.

A visitation for Randy will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3650 W. 106th St., Carmel, IN 46032, with a funeral to follow after the visitation.  His interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 W. 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
