He assisted with revival services at Galilee AME Church and was a member of the Men’s Ministry at Mount Carmel Baptist Church until his health failed.
In 1950, Phillip joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Phillip enjoyed his time in the military and would often talk about how he served as a Drill Sergeant. He received an honorable discharge in 1955.
September of 1958 in Brookhaven, Mississippi Phillip was united in Holy Matrimony to his high school sweetheart Alberta Smith. Soon after, the couple moved to Bronx, New York to start a new life and family. From this union two children were born: Sylvester and Michele. In 1997, Phillip married Myrtis Haynes from Summit, Mississippi. From this union no children were born.

Phillip loved fishing, gardening and Do it yourself projects. He loved that chicken from Popeye’s, Michele’s Liver and Onions, and his son in law Levi’s BBQ. Phillip enjoyed assisting the church with event planning and set up projects. Phillip was an amazing father and when his children came to him with problems he would always say “Don’t worry, we will figure it out”.
