Norman David Newell

April 25, 1942 — September 22, 2022

McCordsville, Indiana

Norman David Newell of McCordsville, IN (formerly of Amherst, and North Eastham, MA), passed away on September 22, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 80.

He was born April 25, 1942, in Northampton, MA, to Hamilton Irving and Faith Eleanor (nee Hill) Newell. He grew up in Amherst, MA, attending Amherst High School (class of 1960) and Amherst College (class of 1964). He graduated with a BA in Economics.

From a young age, he worked at the family printing business, Hamilton I. Newell, Inc. He began sweeping the floors, eventually taking over the business from his father.

He was drafted in 1967 and served two years in the Army, as an MP in New Jersey.  He married Marion M. Eshbach on July 4, 1967. Their two children, Aimee and Nat, were born in the early 1970s after Norman and Marion moved back to Amherst.

He was active in the Amherst community, serving as a town meeting representative, on the Finance Committee, in Rotary Club and the Amherst Club and in several other organizations, including the Amherst Historical Society and the Chamber of Commerce.

Sports, especially baseball, were Norman’s favorite hobby. He grew up a Boston Braves fan, finally forgiving the Red Sox for driving them out of town during the 1967 Impossible Dream season. He coached several teams his children played on, was a softball player into his 50s and still took the extra base during a Vintage Base Ball game in his 70s. Norman played various simulated baseball games with son, Nat, and his brother-in-law, Charlie Eshbach. Norman joined one of the country’s earliest fantasy baseball leagues and played in leagues throughout his life. He followed Boston sports teams, especially the Patriots after his daughter became a fan.

Norman and Marion moved to Cape Cod in 1997 after retiring from the family printing business. On the Cape, Norman worked at the Box Lunch, Cape Cod Community Development Corp and was the head office manager at Cape Cod Disposal. He continued his community service by serving on the Eastham Finance Committee. Norman and Marion lived in Eastham for 15 years before moving to Indiana in 2010 to be closer to their grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Marion M. Newell; children Aimee E. Newell and Nat Newell (Holly); granddaughters Zoey and Sadie Newell; and siblings Nancy Burnham (Paul), Patricia Ryder (Richard), Penelope Allen (Gordon), and Dennis Newell (Karen).

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Daniel Newell.

A celebration of life is being planned in Amherst, MA, to take place in Spring 2023. Please check back.
