Nancy Jane (Grieme) Pottenger, age 92, Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away, Friday, September 30, 2022, surrounded by her family. Nancy was born in Elkhart, Illinois in 1930 to Leo and Rosemary (Jones) Grieme.
She is sister to Leo “LD” (Carloyn) Grieme and Perry (Sally) Grieme. Nancy went to Eureka College in Eureka, IL where she received a degree in English Literature and was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. There, she met her husband, Lloyd A. Pottenger, Jr. They had three children, Garry (Constance), Terry (former wife Susan), and Connie J. Pottenger. Nancy was known as Grandma or G-ma to six grandchildren, Mark (Angela) Land, Chris Glenday, Andrew, Stephanie, Amy (David Braitman), and Megan (Bryan Giusto) Pottenger and Great-Grandma to eight great grandchildren.
Nancy was also known as Aunt Nancy or “Antsy Nancy” to MANY nieces and nephews on both the Grieme and Pottenger side of the family. She was also considered a “second mom” to many people throughout her life. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; parents, Leo and Rosemary; brother, “LD”; son, Terry; granddaughter, Stephanie; and 10 brothers and sister’s in-law.
Nancy had a varied working career which included teaching, working at the family business (Pottenger Nursery), substitute teaching and a long career as a florist with many Indianapolis florists including George Thomas, Gillespie, Country Bear, McNamara, and Sierra Flowers.
For over 50 years Nancy was a member of Seventh and Eighth United Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she was involved in many areas: Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder, President of Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF), Women’s Group Leader of Dorcas Circle, Funeral Dinner Chair, Membership Chair, member of the Pastoral Relations Committee (PRC) and she assisted wherever needed. She currently has been attending Westview Christian Church (DOC), Speedway Christian Church (DOC) and Speedway United Methodist Church along with her daughter Connie J.
She was a very beloved Mom, G-ma, Great Grandma, Aunt, Sister-in-Law, Second Mother, Neighbor and Friend to many people and she will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Friday October 14, 2022, from 4:00-8:00pm at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway, 2950 N High School Road, Indianapolis, IN. Funeral services will be Saturday, at Noon with visitation from 10:00am – 12:00pm before the service, all at Westview Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 5925 W 34th St, Indianapolis, IN. Following the funeral, she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Washington Park North Cemetery.
