Michelle Clare (Hufnagel) Wathen, 64, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away Thursday, August 18, 2022 with her family at her bedside. She was born on August 4, 1958, in Lafayette, Indiana, the daughter of Dr. Linus Joseph and Mrs. Anna Bernice Miller Hufnagel. After graduating from Vincennes Lincoln High School in 1976, she attended Vincennes University where she obtained an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. On December 27, 1986, she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Kevin Douglas Wathen, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Vincennes. Kevin preceded Michelle in death in 2019.
Michelle and Kevin lived in Indianapolis, Indiana during the entirety of their marriage. Michelle worked as a nurse for more than thirty years in nursing homes in the Indianapolis area. She was a very caring advocate for the elderly. Michelle and Kevin were blessed with a daughter, Katrina Ann Clare. The Wathens were huge sports fans. They were season ticket holders for the Indianapolis Ice; they loved the Pacers and all of the Chicago professional teams, in particular, the Cubs. Michelle especially loved college basketball; she was an enormous fan of Indiana University basketball, both the men’s and women’s teams. She never missed a game and loved discussing IU basketball.
Michelle is survived by her daughter, Katrina Wathen, of Indianapolis, her brother, John Hufnagel and his wife, Teresa, of Fort Myers, Florida, her sister, Mary Anne Davenport and her husband, Charles, of Houston, Texas and her nieces and nephew, Rachel and Emily Hufnagel and Kristen and Connor Davenport.
In addition to her husband, Michelle was preceded in death by her parents.
Calling will be held Thursday, August 25th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46250. Additional calling will occur Friday, August 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7200 Sarto Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, 9001 Haverstick Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
