Michael “Kevin” McCarley, 61, Carmel, IN
June 16, 1961 – July 10, 2022
Michael “Kevin” McCarley left his earthly home on July 10, 2022, after fighting through four decades of Crohn’s Disease. He received a small intestine transplant at the University of Birmingham Alabama Medical Center (UAB) in 2018. Kevin was forever grateful to the 11-year-old donor from North Carolina. Kevin was the son of the late Mary Virginia Givens McCarley and Thomas Jackson McCarley.
Kevin graduated from Coffee High School in Florence, AL, in 1979 where he played football, wrestled, and ran track. His love of sports later led to training and racing as a triathlete where he could test his skills in swimming, biking, and running. In 1984, he graduated from the University of North Alabama and enjoyed brotherhood in Phi Gamma Delta serving as Corresponding Secretary his junior year and President his senior year.
Kevin worked for TDK in Huntsville, AL. He traveled the world as a salesman and then Global Sales Manager of small capacitor chips. In 1991, Kevin transferred to the TDK office in Indianapolis and quickly bought his first winter coat. Kevin enjoyed the beautiful Indiana snowfalls.
On a blind date in 1992, Kevin met Hillary Ann Buckley, and in 1994 married “quickly” when he was presented the opportunity to move, open and oversee the European presence in Scotland, UK, for Steward EMC. His sisters told Kevin he was not taking a girlfriend! Hillary and Kevin packed their belongings and settled in the quaint village of Mid Calder, West Lothian, one month later. Living and working in Scotland had its challenges, but Kevin would say “it was simply a dream.” Hillary and Kevin enjoyed golf at their home course of Deer Creek Golf Club, met many Scottish and American expatriate friends, and traveled to many countries while covering Northern and Southern Europe. Kevin said it was a joy to host so many visitors while living in the UK for 4 ½ years. Every single visitor would receive the grand tour of Edinburgh, including the famous Edinburgh Castle.
Kevin and Hillary’s son, Michael Kevin McCarley, II was born prematurely in Scotland in 1998 and a transfer back to the US was necessary to pursue treatment and therapies. After a year and a half in Schaumburg, IL, Kevin transferred to the TDK Kokomo office where home was in Carmel.
Kevin could always be found watching the Alabama Crimson Tide play on Saturdays and following SEC football. McCarley license plates boast the 17th and 18th National Championship wins under Nick Saban and would always get the side eye from Notre Dame fans when passing on the road. Kevin was a proud member of the NRA, Trump Supporter, Fox News junkie and enjoyed honing his shooting skills at local ranges. Kevin loved breakfast on the weekends at Sunrise Café and was a supporter of Canine Companions. The family became a skilled-companion team with Durban II and successor dog Dee III. Kevin was also a two-time puppy raiser for the organization and was proud of Moritz (Service Dog to Dallas in Leavenworth, KS) and Jetty III (Change of Career in Dayton, OH).
Mourning Kevin’s loss is his wife of almost 28 years, Hillary, son Michael, and very special “daughter” and best friend of Michael, Erica Zirkelbach, all of Carmel, twin sister, Kerry McCarley Sharp, Birmingham, AL, and siblings Roy E. McCorkle, III (Marilyn Steverson McCorkle) Huntsville, AL, Mary Thomas Imhoff (Bob Imhoff), and Jackie White (John White), Florence, AL. Mother-in-law Janet Buckley (Joseph Kaiser), sister-in-law Cassandra Short (Jeff) all of Indianapolis, Aunt Frances Ashley (Toana, VA), and Aunt Melba Givens (Ruston, LA).
