Mary Elizabeth Russell

Mary Elizabeth (Pyatt) Russell, age 101, passed away at her home in Rockville, IN on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022. She was born June 7th, 1920, in Indianapolis, IN to the late William Wilson Pyatt and Pearl Zetta (Corhan) Pyatt. Mary is preceded in death by 4 brothers, Walter, Bob, William, & Harry and twin sisters Dorothy & Doris.

Mary was married to William (Bill) Russell in 1940, and they had 2 daughters (Suzanne and Lucinda) and 1 son (Mark). She cared for her husband until his passing in 1967, and then cared for her companion John Freije until his passing in 1984. She spent many years thereafter being a live-in caregiver to 5 of her grandchildren. Mary lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Rockville, IN for the remainder of her life.

Mary was an avid reader of books, and you could always find stacks of them close by. She especially loved reading novels. She also loved working in the garden and planting flowers.

She loved God and would go to church whenever she could. She received great comfort in prayer and watching Christian television. Mary was loved and adored by all who knew her, and she would always leave you with a smile in your heart.

Mary is survived by her children, Suzanne Vititoe, Lucinda Carnes (Roy Carnes), and Mark Russell, 9 grandchildren and 60+ great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at Flanner & Buchanan – Floral Park Funeral Home, located at 425 N. Holt Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46222. Visitation for the family will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Open visitation will be from noon to 2:00 p.m. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor David Gibson officiating.
