Mary Alice Mchale

December 6, 1949 — June 8, 2022

Carmel, IN

Alice McHale, of Carmel, IN, passed away at St. Vincent hospital on June 8, 2022, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

She was born Mary Alice McHale in Baltimore, MD, on December 6, 1949, to John and Katherine (Thomas) McHale. She was a wonderful big sister to 5 siblings. Alice attended school in Westminster, MD, and Dayton, OH, and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Ohio University. She resided briefly in southern Indiana, where she met her husband, Phil, and in Los Angeles, CA, where they eloped to Las Vegas, before making their home in Floyds Knobs, IN, where their daughter Siobhan was born. Alice worked as a respiratory therapist, and as a social worker, before happening upon her favorite job as a substitute teacher in the New Albany Floyd County school system, where she worked for many years. After a brief stint in Pocatello, ID, she returned to Indiana, and spent many happy years watching her grandson, Ronan.

Alice was always up for a card game, especially bridge or euchre. She loved to read, and shared her voraciousness for books with her daughter and grandson. She was a wonderful cook, especially her baked goods, like homemade pizza, bread, and scones. Gardening was a passion of hers, and she loved to stop and look at other people’s gardens and discuss their plants with them. Her favorite vacations were to the beach, especially Ocean City, MD, and in recent years had enjoyed traveling to new destinations with her daughter, grandson, son-in-law Adam, and his parents, Wrangler and Vicki Thomas.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, younger brother Jack McHale, and ex-husband Phil Davis. She is survived by her daughter Siobhan Davis, son-in-law Adam Thomas, grandson Ronan Sondhe, siblings Jeanne McHale (Fritz Knorr), Elizabeth McHale, Susan Hartzell, and Steve McHale, and nieces and nephews Madeline Tartakovsky (Steven), Captain Bob Hartzell, and Gabe McHale (Laurie Johnston).

A visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan (325 E. Carmel Dr, Carmel IN) on Friday June 17 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, followed by a service at 2:30, and burial afterwards at Carmel Cemetery (1000 N. Rangeline Rd, Carmel IN). Please join us in celebrating Alice’s life and free spirit by wearing tie dye and bright colors, or the funeral attire of your choosing.
