MARTHA LEE (WILLIAMS) BEAN 1925-2022

Martha L. (Williams) Bean, left this world on November 11, 2022. She was a resident of Greenwood Village South in Greenwood, Indiana.

Martha was born on August 30, 1925, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Orville Albert and Sylvia Edith (Coryell) Williams. She was a graduate of Beech Grove High School and married high school sweetheart, Robert, in 1943. They were married 67 years upon his passing in 2010.

Survivors include sons Gregory Bean of Indianapolis; Mark (Jennifer) Bean of Zionsville; grandchildren Sean, Joshua, Erin, Samantha (Rafael) Ortega; Jacob (Gina), and Elliott; two great-grandchildren (another on the way); sister Velma (Eugene) Dalton of Coal City; niece Christi Lowder; nephew Robbie Dalton; and several great nieces and nephews.

Though she wouldn’t have considered herself a “modern” lady, Martha was ahead of her time when it came to balancing work and home life.  And she did so with grace. She re-entered the workforce at Consolidated Rail offices in downtown Indianapolis after spending several years at home. She continued her most important role as Mom, managed the household while Robert traveled for business, and was a caregiver to aging parents during most of these years.

Martha’s lighter side enjoyed accompanying Robert on social engagements and vacations; she also liked sharing jokes she came across. She’d tell a few but was mostly known for mailing comic strips, along with letters, cards, and many other clippings from her current events reading.

After retiring, she and Robert moved to Naples, Florida. They spent nearly two decades as Floridians before returning to familiar stomping grounds on the south side of Indy, settling into their charming cottage at Greenwood Village South.

Martha was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and worshipped at several United Methodist congregations over the years.
