M. Alice Scott, 88, of Speedway (aka the Farmer’s Daughter Florist) passed away on July 16, 2022. She was born August 14, 1933 in Muncie, IN to the late Ivron and Dorothy (Alvey) Farmer. As a freshman at Howe High School she caught the eye of Earl “Scotty” Scott, Jr. across the lunchroom and they were engaged by December of her senior year. The only thing she ever wanted to do with her life was to be a wife and a mother and that is exactly what she did as mother to Debby (Jay) Ruklic, Lori (Eric) Jordan and Andy (Tami) Scott. As the older girls left home she began a very successful floral business and literally made thousands of boutonnieres and corsages for high school prom and homecoming goers as well as decorated many weddings, local businesses, churches and funerals. Nothing made her happier than to have someone recognize her as their wedding florist from 30 or 40 years ago. She and Scotty loved hiking in the Smoky Mountains, and even summited the highest peak, LeConte, in her late 60’s. Their love of hiking and the mountains has transcended three generations. She loved decorating her home for every holiday, setting elegant tables, wrapping beautiful gifts, hosting themed birthday parties, having all her kids for pool parties, swinging on her patio, and drinking tea. Lots of tea. And well, wine and margaritas on occasion. She never thought she was a good cook but her family will always crave her grilled tenderloins, amazing french fries and blueberry pancakes. Alice was always “put together,” had a 5-step skin care regimen and was totally made up even at home alone. She met Jesus with mascara on. She was “Grammy” to 7 grandchildren and “Great-Grammy” to 2 great grandchildren, making “air sandwiches” and spending hours and hours sitting on the floor playing games like Maisie and Race To The Roof. She even looked the other way when someone (you know who you are) was inclined to cheat. She lost her Scotty nine years ago after being an extraordinary care giver throughout his illness. She had loved him for 65 years and didn’t quite know how to live without him. In her final days she expressed excitement at being reunited with the love of her life as well as her family and many friends who had left before her. Alice was a member of Speedway Christian Church for over 60 years, a former Speedway Schools PTA president (originated the annual SHS Chili Supper), and was a member of Tri Kappa. Visitation hours will be held Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 10am-12 noon with the funeral service immediately following at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Home, 2950 N. High School Road, Speedway, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to The Speedway Lions Club.
