Leva "Lj" Jenny Hughes

Leva “LJ” Jenny Hughes, 93, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on January 5, 2020. She was born January 16, 1926 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Orin and Anna Hall; she was one of three children.

Born and raised in the Indianapolis area, Leva “LJ”attended Ben Davis High School. She met and married the love of her life, Carl Hughes, in 1947. The two met while working at Harvester. It was love at first sight for Leva, she knew then that Carl would be the man she spent her life with. They spent many beautiful years together watching their family grow and remained deeply in love at the time of Carl’s passing. Though Leva worked many jobs during her lifetime, Harvester, Pride Vending, Allisons, her greatest role was always that of a mother and homemaker. Her family, affectionately known as “The Hughes Tribe” was her absolute pride, especially her children and grandchildren. Leva belonged to the VFW Post #98 Ladies Auxiliary. She loved music, especially Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. She also loved playing Euchre and even belonged to a Euchre club for over 20 years. Her passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet her; she was truly one of a kind.

Leva is preceded in death by her parents, Orin and Anna; husband, Carl; daughter, Sandy Thomas; siblings, Anna and Orin Jr.; son-in-laws, Gary Faires and Dennis Thomas. Surviving to cherish her memory are children; Carl Hughes, Randy Hughes, Mark (Carol) Hughes, Sheila Faires, Brian Hughes, Sharon (Phil) Ortega, Shelley Stephens, Brett (Shannon) Hughes, Stacy Hughes-Stanjevich; 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

All are welcome to visit Thursday, January 9 from 4-8 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park Cemetery, 425 N Holt Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222. Funeral services will take place Friday, January 10 at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior. She will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Leva’s memory to The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Society, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
