Lester Talbot Gordon Ii

January 22, 1940 — January 7, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Lester Talbot Gordon II of Zionsville passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 in Carmel, Indiana. Les was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 22nd, 1940, to the late Lester Talbot Gordon and Helen Louise Waldron Gordon.

Les attended Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis where he was active in sports and the music program. One of his proudest memories from high school was performing the trumpet solo for the national anthem before the sectional, regional, semi-state and state final basketball games at the Hinkle Field House in 1956 and 1957. Throughout his high school years, he also performed with the Central Indiana Boy Scout Band and annually traveled across the country playing in the band.

After graduating in 1958, Les attended Butler University in Indianapolis, where he met his future wife, Marcia Foster Gordon. They were married August 6th, 1960 in the Sweeney Chapel at Butler University. Soon after, he began a 41-year career with the United States Postal Service. He served in many progressive capacities over those years: from Distribution Clerk, Supervisor, General Foreman of Mail, Acting Postal Operations Manager in Indianapolis, and Postmaster at the Lebanon and Frankfurt post offices. He retired from the USPS in 2002.

Les had many interests – travel, a love of collecting bikes, toys and lithographs, and he worked tirelessly on family genealogy, tracing some lines back to the early 17th century. He also loved playing bridge with friends and always enjoyed a party. He was also an avid fan of Indiana University, Purdue University and Butler University sports.

One of his greatest joys was coaching his boys in Little League Baseball at the Lions Club Park. He also supported them in high school in the basketball and tennis programs, spending countless hours shooting baskets and playing tennis with them after work. With his grandchildren, he enjoyed watching their activities and hearing of their accomplishments. Les was a proud father and grandfather.

By far, his greatest love was for his family. Les leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Marcia Foster Gordon. He is also survived by his two children, Greg (Sue) Gordon and Todd (Margaret) Gordon and his seven grandchildren: Patrick (Erin), Emily, Conner (Danielle), Grace, Quinn, Eve, and Erin. Brothers: the late George (Marsha) Gordon and Bill Gordon, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial calling will be held on Friday January 13, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan-Zionsville from 1 pm to 3 pm with a Celebration of Life at 3 pm
