L. Nadine (Johnson) Hill, 71, was born on April 9, 1946 in Freelandville, Indiana to Donald and Hulda (Schluessler) Johnson and died on October 11, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nadine was widowed at the time of her death. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and religious leader in the Presbytery of Whitewater Valley and the Synod of Lincoln Trails of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Nadine grew up in Hendricks County, Indiana and graduated from Brownsburg High School. She attended Indiana Business College and Butler University. Her professional career was as a Legal Administrative Assistant/Paralegal in the practice group of Creditors’ Rights & Bankruptcy Law. Nadine retired from Bingham Greenbaum Doll, LLP in February 2009.
Nadine was involved with church work and volunteerism for over 45 years. She moderated many task forces, committees, ministries and religious retreats. She was an ordained Elder and Deacon in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Nadine was a member at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. At Second Presbyterian, she was a ChristCare Group Leader, served on the Sages Council and was active in Presbyterian Women (PW). For five years, she chaired the Silent Auction of the PW Bazaar at Second raising nearly $35,000 for PW2nd mission. She also launched the Human Trafficking Team at Second. She most recently organized a bucket drive to support hurricane recovery efforts. Nadine served in many positions on the Whitewater Valley Presbyterian Women’s Presbytery Coordinating Team including Moderator; she is currently Treasurer and Co-Moderator of Leadership and Development. She also served as Moderator of the Synod Presbyterian Women’s Coordinating Team. Since 1996, Nadine was a seminar/workshop leader for the Discovery of Spiritual Gifts. She was also a public speaker regarding her faith journey to combat Human Trafficking.
Besides being a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Nadine is also a member of the Indiana Historical Society, the Daughters of the America Revolution (DAR) and volunteers at the Center for Global Impact. In January 2012, she founded the Ecumenical Women’s Coalition Against Human Trafficking—EWCA Restoring Hope with the intention to educate and inform about, particularly, sex trafficking of very young girls and eventually build an outreach center for preventative care of girls at risk. In her “me” time, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her four “grandhoneys,” gardening, music, reading, loom knitting and travelling.
Nadine is a fellow in Cambridge Who’s Who Among Executive and Professional Women in Religious Services and was bestowed with Presbyterian Women’s highest distinction in 1995 of an Honorary Life Membership. She was also the Synod of Lincoln Trails representative for the 2013 USA Mission Experience to Appalachia.
As the Founder and CEO of EWCA Restoring Hope, she has been published in the award-winning Presbyterian Women’s magazine, HORIZONS, the Jan./Feb. 2014 issue. Also, Nadine is published in the HENDRICKS COUNTY HOME magazine, Feb. 2014 issue.
Nadine is survived in death by her children Aimee Renee Eller (Danny), J. Wade Hill, Jr. and Kimberly Denise Sowder (Terry); her four grandchildren, Bailey Kaufman, Morgaine Eller Larsen Eller and Jake Sowder; her two siblings, Sandra D. Pauley (Bill) and Randall S. Johnson (Pamela); her nieces Angelynn Marsden and Kayla Johnson and her nephew Garett Johnson. She is preceded in death by her husband James W. Hill and her parents Donald E. and Hulda A. (Schluessler) Johnson.
