Kim Christine Velasco Tomlin

June 12, 1957 — December 13, 2022

Indianapolis, Indiana

Kim Christine Velasco Tomlin was born on June 12, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, the first of three children and only daughter born to Armando (Army) Rey Velasco and Louise Jane Schwartz Velasco. She died on Tuesday evening, December 13, 2022 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis at the age of 65 years, 6 months, and 1 day; each of them precious gifts to her and all who knew her.

Kim grew up in Berne, Indiana and attended South Adams High School. She attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana where she graduated with a BA in Choral Music Education in 1980.  It was also at Taylor where she met Mark Tomlin. Kim and Mark were married at First Missionary Church in Berne on April 5, 1980, which was Easter weekend. They were blessed with two sons, Ryan and Grant.

Kim worked for one year as a K-12 music teacher.  She was the Director of the Eli Lilly Employee Activities Chorus for over 35 years, and just a month ago, she led a rehearsal and the performance for a Veterans Day Activity. But Kim’s primary focus was her family, providing a safe and nurturing home for Mark and the boys.

Mark and Kim have been active members of Faith Church for over 40 years since 1981, invited by the Luginbills and finding others with a Berne connection. Kim was what could be called a “super volunteer” in the church, fiercely faithful to any commitments she made; singing in the choir, serving as choir librarian, which meant preparing and distributing music and service order for the choir and anyone else involved in the service, using her gifts for organization and detail. Kim and Mark were active in the Madrigal performances for 25 years, serving in the latter years as Lord and Lady of the Hall. And even more, Kim was both director and teacher of 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School/Faith Kids for over 40 years.

Kim was not just a worker, but a lover of all things related to worship music; she insisted on being early for worship to take part in the prelude, ensuring that the words projected for the hymns were correct, that all participants had the right music, and that everyone had a current copy of the worship order with their parts highlighted.

Being the first of her generation to enter the presence of her Lord and Savior, Kim is survived by:

Her parents, Army and Jane Velasco of Berne, Indiana; her husband, Mark Tomlin of Indianapolis; sons, Ryan (Brittnee) Tomlin of Hudsonville, Michigan; Grant (Kiersten) Tomlin of Lafayette, Indiana; two brothers, Kirk Velasco of Destin, Florida, and Kyle Velasco (Tammy) of Parker, Colorado; grandson, Charles Tomlin; and nephews, Daniel and Drew Velasco.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2022, at Faith Church, 9125 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.  The service may be viewed via live-stream using the following link: https://faithchurchindy.online.church/.  Kim will be laid to rest in Mazelin Cemetery, Berne, Indiana.
