Jolene Nyberg Hurst was born January 30th, 1937, in Soudan, Minnesota, the only child of Charles Gustaf Nyberg and Mary Peshek Nyberg. She passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on November 16th, 2022.

She attended Soudan Grade School and Junior High School. After graduating from Tower-Soudan High School in 1955, she attended Vermilion Community College (formally Ely Junior College) before transferring and graduating from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth with a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management in 1959.

After living in Chicago for several years, Jolene moved to Buffalo, New York to work at Roswell Park Memorial Institute.  In 1967, at Four Squares Social Group she met Richard Maurice Hurst, whom she would marry the following year. Into this union two children were born, Ruthann Waits and Richard Michael Hurst. In 1978, they moved to Indianapolis.

Her career in hospitals extended 40 years as she worked at the University of Illinois (Chicago, IL), Roswell Park Memorial Institute (Buffalo, NY), Methodist Hospital (Indianapolis, IN) and retired from Westview Osteopathic Hospital in 2002.

After retirement, she and Richard spent time traveling the world. They visited all continents including seeing the Antarctic from a cruise ship. Their trips sometimes included family.

Jolene was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic church and volunteered in Matthew 25 Activities in both Merciful Help and Housewares ministry and Trinity Free Clinic until her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2019, which she successfully fought for over 3 years.

Her family was her greatest joy, and their family dinners were her happiest events. After her diagnosis, her joys were being with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Maurice Hurst; daughter, Ruthann Waits; son, Richard Michael Hurst; and her three grandchildren, Nathan (Emma) Waits, Alissa Waits and Benjamin Waits.
