John Richard Newport passed away on 17 April 2023.  He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Davey) Newport, sisters Sue (Newport) Bill Demerly, Judy (Newport) Lawson, brother James Newport, brothers-in-law Bob and Theresa Davey, Tom and Carol Davey, sister-in-law Pat (Davey) Ron Kammer and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Bernadine (Thoele) Newport, in-laws Bob and Evelyn (Schreiber) Davey.

Visitation will be held on Monday April 24, 2023, at Flanner and Buchanan-Zionsville Funeral Center 105 W. Pine Street, Zionsville, IN 46077 from 4 to 8 pm.  Additional visitation will be held on Tuesday April 25, 2023, at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church 1870 Oak Street, Zionsville, IN 46077 from 10 to 11 am with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11 am.

Interment will be held at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery 9001 N. Haverstick Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46240.

John graduated from Cathedral High School (Indianapolis), IUPUI with a Bachelors and a Masters in physics and Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) with a PhD in theoretical physics.  He worked at Naval Avionics (Indianapolis) as an avionics consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense, gaining national recognition as an expert on embedded computer resources.  He was the founder and president of a private consulting firm, Newport Systems, Inc.  He also taught physics and mathematics at Butler University, IUPUI, Ball State University, Carmel High School and various other universities as an adjunct professor.  He has authored numerous technical reports, papers, and books on embedded computer architecture and design.

NASCAR and other car races were a passion for John.  He loved history and toured many of the Civil War battle sites.  He was a member of the Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable.  He was an avid gardener and enjoyed walking and puzzles of any kind (jig saw, crossword, Sudoku).  He was a commercial pilot with instrument and multi-engine ratings.  His religion was important to him and as a member of St. Alphonsus Liguori he served as a Eucharistic minister.  He will be sorely missed.
