John Jerome Staton

The Reverend John Jerome Staton, died peacefully on Saturday April 14th, 2018 from natural causes, in Carmel, Indiana.
Born June 8, 1929 to the parents of Elzie Jerome Staton and Helen LaVonne Huffman Staton in Columbus, Ohio, he is survived by three children; Katherine Staton Young, Joan Staton (Mark) Siem , and James Arthur (Laura) Staton , five grandchildren; Kristin Siem (Ned) Matthews, Laura Siem (Tim) Martins, Jacob Andrew Siem, Isabella LaPlante Staton, Evan Jerome Staton, and three great-grandchildren.; Conner, Sophia, and Grace Matthews, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his wife Shirley Ann Welch Staton, his oldest son, Robert Jerome Staton, and his sister Virginia Staton Dailey.
John graduated from North High, Columbus, Ohio, in 1947 and Dartmouth College in 1951, a comparative literature and philosophy major. He married Shirley upon graduation and attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City, receiving a Masters of Divinity Degree in 1954.
During the course of his life Rev. Staton served four churches, Union, Congregational Church, Glenwood, MN, St. Johns Reformed, UCC, LaCrosse Wisconsin, First Congregational Christian Church, UCC, Kokomo, Indiana, and Union Congregational Church, UCC, Green Bay, Wisconsin, He retired to Carmel, Indiana in 1989.
John, a life long member of Rotary, and a member of First Congregational Church, UCC, Indianapolis, Indiana, served on the board of Northland College and the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. He was an avid supporter of environmental and human rights issues, was politically active, and had a love affair with the north woods.
Visitation is Saturday May 12th, 2-4pm at Flanner and Buchanan of Carmel.
A memorial service will be held on May 13th at 2pm, First Congregational Church, Indianapolis, UCC.
