John Dennis O’Hara, 75, was born in Indianapolis on August 7, 1946, and passed away on June 22, 2022. He attended Scecina Memorial High School and was a resident of the Broad Ripple area for the majority of his life. John was very invested in his community and once served as the president of the Broad Ripple Village Association. He also served as a Marion County Sheriff, running the civil division Sheriff sale. He was passionate about civil rights work and a lifelong Democrat, acting as precinct committeeman and ward chairman. He was elected Constable for Washington Township small claims court and served for 12 years. From 1966-1972, he served in the army reserve as a medic. He was married to Anne Scanlon in 1966 and they remained married for 23 years. They were lifelong friends and enjoyed spending time together at family gatherings. He had a long-term relationship with Nance Carlson, whose children Nick and Drew extended our family further. John is survived by his former wife, Anne, and their three children, Colleen O’Hara, Casey O’Hara Williams (Adam), and Danny O’Hara (Julia). John was immensely proud of his ten grandchildren: Dillon, Naif, Mohssen, Ibrahim, Bella, Teah, Sofia, Lauren, Henry, and Nellie Quinn. He is also survived by four siblings: Maeve O’Hara, Maureen O’Hara, Mark O’Hara (Carolyn), and Molly Akard (Ralph) and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father James O’Hara, his mother Phyllis, and stepfather Howard Schank. If you would like to donate in John’s memory, please consider the Indiana Civil Liberties Union. A visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan-Broad Ripple 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue from 2-5 PM on July 2, 2022, with a brief time for loved ones to share memories at the beginning.
