John Allen Smith

John A Smith, born April 13, 1931 in Washington, Indiana passed away peacefully in New Berlin Wisconsin on November 20th, 2022, at the age of 91 with his beloved wife Lois and granddaughter Maggie by his side.

John, the youngest of 7 siblings, was born April 13, 1931, in Washington, Indiana, to father Barbee Smith and mother Opha (Browning) Smith. John played basketball for the Air Force while he was stationed in England, where he married Elsie “Jean” Cox in 1952.  John and Jean returned to Indiana, where they raised their 3 children, Pamela, Alan, and Ward Smith. John worked in Indianapolis as a tool-maker for Western Electric until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed being active, spending his free time gardening, golfing, fishing, and playing cards with family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, by his siblings Ned, Dwight, Russel, Kenneth, Kyle, and Ruth, by his wife Jean (2007), and by his children Pamela (1977) and Alan (2020). He is survived by his son Ward and granddaughter Maggie Spicer as well as by his loving wife, Lois Beste-Vergetis, whom he married in New Berlin, Wisconsin in 2018. John and Lois enjoyed 4 wonderful years of marriage together, spending their time in both Wisconsin and Florida, fishing, golfing, playing games, and traveling with dear friends and family.

A celebration of Life Luncheon is planned for Friday, December 9th, 2022, where friends and family will honor John’s wishes by gathering to share memories over a nice meal together.

People wishing to honor John’s lifelong love of animals can make donations to the Humane Society or another local animal shelter.
