Jerry Edward Cummins, 78, of Martinsville passed away on August 9, 2021. Jerry was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 17, 1943 to the late Inez and Frank Cummins.
Jerry was a dedicated Skills Tradesman for Allison Transmission for 44 years. Many of those years Jerry was an elected representative of the Union Auto Workers (UAW Local 933) which involved contract negotiations and settling grievances. He was instrumental in securing the protection and rights of union workers in the auto industry. During his tenure, it was not unusual to see Jerry driving the latest GM sports cars.
Jerry grew up in Fountain Square and graduated from Manual High School in 1962. His 6’ 3” stature and his natural athletic abilities earned him spots on the Track and Field, football, and basketball teams. He was awarded “All City-All State” status as a linebacker in football and was a member of the 1961 IHSAA state runner-up basketball team which included Indiana Co-Mr. Basketball players, the Van Arsdale twins.
Over the years, Jerry continued to do the things he enjoyed including golfing, owning and competing in regional harness horse races, fishing, traveling locally and abroad and watching a variety of sports with friends while savoring a tall cold beer. Best words to describe Jerry are friendly, easy going, laid back, funny, caring, loving, respectful, accepting and patient.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Judy with whom he shared 22 wonderful years. Jerry is preceded in death by his sister, Joan “Bonnie” Liggett, and survived by his siblings (spouse); Joe (Sandy) Cummins, Sondra Shinnamon, Bob (Rosie) Cummins, Cathy (Mike) Harris; previous spouse and friend, Jean Kirschner Cummins and sons Tim (Christine) Cummins, Greg Cummins, and stepson Kris (Jaime) Shorter; three grandchildren; Jackie, Emily & Kendall and two (almost three) great grandchildren.
