James Guffey

James B. Guffey, 76, Carmel, passed away January 4, 2017. He was born March 9, 1940, in Louisville, KY, the son of the late James William and Dorothy (Bareford) Guffey.

Jim graduated from Fern Creek High School, Fern Creek, KY, where he met his future wife, Paula Zinke. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville, where he was a member of Beta Tau fraternity. He later received his second Master degree from Eden Theological Seminary. After graduation, he pastored Salem United Church of Christ (Evansville, IN), Northeast United Church of Christ (Indianapolis, IN), and Browns Wonder United Church of Christ (Lebanon, IN).

Jim retired in 2013, after serving his community for over 41 years as an agent for State Farm. He was an active member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and South Shore United Church of Christ in Sun City Center, Florida. He was a Mason and Past-Master of Millersville Lodge #126, Past-Thrice Potent Master and 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite, and active in other Masonic organizations. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel and was elected to the Fern Creek High School Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 ½ years, Paula Guffey; two sons, David Guffey and William (Jodi) Guffey; and three grandchildren, Madilyn, Katelyn, and Braden.

A Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 3106 East Carmel Drive. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Peter’s United Church of Christ or South Shore United Church of Christ. Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel.
