James J. Sullivan

August 8, 1940 — June 30, 2023

Carmel, Indiana

James “Jim” Sullivan, 82, passed away on June 30, 2023. He was born in Hammond, IN, on August 8, 1940, the son of the late Lester and Mary (Yerga) Sullivan.

Jim completed his undergraduate studies at University of Michigan and Indiana State University, and obtained his Master’s degree from Purdue University. He taught math for four years at Highland Junior/Senior High Schools, in Highland, IN, where he met a fellow teacher and his future wife, Marian. After moving to the Chicago suburbs, Jim taught math, economics and computers at Rich Township District 227, in Richton Park, IL, for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2000.

Jim could often be found on a golf course and coached golf at Rich South High School for many years. He dearly loved his family. He also loved all things University of Michigan (“Go Blue!”), model railroading, and travel. He and Marian thoroughly enjoyed six European trips. In the months before each trip, Jim enjoyed planning these exciting adventures.

His favorite activity, though, was supporting his grandchildren and attending their sporting events and concerts, and loving every minute with them! Jim’s precious time with his grandkids often included games, puzzles, math riddles, and, of course, sneaking in many treats like Slurpees, Dairy Queen, Happy Meals, and Aurelio’s Pizza.

Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marian; daughters Kristin (Adam), Kara (Ian), and Courtney (Joel); and his brother, Bob (Pat). He is also survived by his five grandchildren – Gabrielle, Rowan, Juliana, Knox and Delaney; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 12:30 to 2 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2 pm, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel Funeral Home, 325 E. Carmel Drive in Carmel, IN. An informal gathering for family and friends will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to First Tee-Indiana, P.O. Box 26159, Indianapolis, IN 46226, and Wheeler Mission shelter, P.O. Box 3085, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
