James A. Bevan, 79, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on September 13, 2022. Jim was born in St. Paul Minnesota, September 3, 1943, the son of Jay and Margery (Fraser) Bevan.

Jim was a 1965 ROTC graduate of the University of Minnesota with a BA in Political Science. He had a distinguished 27-year career in the United States Army and Army Reserve where he was a decorated Combat Veteran and rose to the rank of Colonel. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Jim attended Officer Basic Training then earned his “Airborne” Jump Wings at Ft. Bragg NC and the coveted “Ranger” tab at Ft. Benning GA.

Jim’s first assignment overseas was Korea before his promotion to Captain. As an Infantry Company Commander, Jim deployed to Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division, 47th Infantry Regiment (Riverine), 4th Battalion, Company E in 1968. As an Infantry Rifle Commander, Captain Bevan was wounded on patrol in the Mekong Delta. For his gallant action under fire, Jim was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and “V” for Valor, the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Purple Heart. As a Major and Lt. Col, Jim held Battalion and Regimental Staff positions on multiple tours in Germany and the US. Additionally, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and several others. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1994 but continued serving as a Civil Service employee to the DOD US Army Finance Center at Ft. Harrison in Indianapolis until 2002.

Jim was an avid reader of history, a skilled woodworker and craftsman, enjoyed fishing, target practice, traveling, and stamp collecting.

A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julie (Timgren) Bevan of Carmel, his children; Scott Bevan of Indianapolis, IN and Stacy Bevan of Charlotte, NC and one sister: Barbara Summers of Morgantown, WV, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Margery.

A Visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, Friday, September 16, from 1 pm to 2 pm, with a Celebration of Life following at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mr. Bevan’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
