Herman C. Brandt Jr

January 26, 1932 — July 9, 2022

Fishers, IN

Herman Charles Brandt, Jr. entered the gates of Heaven on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the age of 90. He was born in Harmony, Indiana in 1932 to Herman (Sr.) and Arling Brandt. The oldest of seven children, he was a devoted big brother. Known as “Sonny” to his siblings, he was dearly loved and revered by all of them.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Ben Davis High School, Herman went on to receive a degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University (he loved his Boilermakers!) then served proudly in the United States Army, where he taught Radio and supervised the Voice Radio School. He later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the Alexander Hamilton Institute. Herman then embarked on a long, successful career in both Chemical and Mechanical Engineering.  For many years, he traveled the region as a Manufacturer’s Rep, meeting with customers and making friends everywhere he went. He was a former President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, former Board President at Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, where he was active for many years, and President of his beloved Kesslerwood neighborhood association on the north side of Indianapolis.

In February 2021, Herman lost his beloved wife, Sharon, for whom he cared lovingly and devotedly after she suffered a stroke in 2010. They were married for 58 years and raised seven children together. They loved to travel, entertain, and spend time with family, friends, and neighbors. His sister Mary Summers (Warren), brother Richard Brandt, and son Ronald Brandt also preceded him in death.

He is survived by six of his children: Kristen Miller (Don Perkins), Paula Elliott (Jeff), Susan Brandt, Lisa John (Jay), Pam Wickham (Paul) and Randy Brandt (Mary Beth). He also leaves behind eight grandsons who loved him dearly, and of whom he was infinitely proud: Evan, Chase & Benjamin Elliott, Daniel Miller, Tyler & Trevor John, and Mac & Sam Perkins. He will be sorely missed by his surviving siblings: Dave Brandt (Jan), Dean Brandt (Bonnie), Charles Brandt, and Betty Franklin, along with sister-in-law Judy Brandt and numerous nieces and nephews.

“Herman the German,” as he liked to call himself, was warm, generous, gregarious and a joy to be around. He loved playing golf, watching sports, and attending his grandsons’ many activities. He was also very fond of chocolate! He was a man of strong faith and is now happy and whole, reunited with Sharon, and in the arms of our Savior.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with a funeral service immediately following, at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Drive. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org/donate.
