Rev. Dr. Harold Vaughn Smith

The Rev. Dr. Harold V. Smith passed away Nov. 2, 2022 in Indianapolis. Known to his parishioners as Fr. Harold, was born in Muncie, Indiana, on February 25, 1935 to Norman H. and Beatrice E. Neeley Smith. He attended Royerton Schools and graduated from Royerton High School in 1953. He graduated from Ball State Teachers College in 1962, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education, and from Ball State University in 1967 with a Master of Arts in Education. In 1981 he received his Doctor of Arts degree from Ball State in Vocal Performance.
During his teaching career he taught public school music at public and private schools in Indiana, Kentucky, and Kansas. He also taught choral and vocal music at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, and directed the Darke County (Ohio) Oratorio Society and the Eastern Wyoming College Community Choir in Torrington, WY.
In 1984 he entered the Episcopal Seminary in Kentucky in Lexington, KY, graduating in 1987 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1988 and to the priesthood in 1989 in the Diocese of Nebraska, and served churches in Neligh and Creighton, NE, Torrington, WY, Lebanon, IN and Connersville, IN before his retirement in 2008. After his retirement he did supply work for the Diocese of Indianapolis at churches in West Terre Haute and Elwood, IN.
He also served as a church musician at churches in Muncie, Richmond, KY, Lexington, KY and Russell, KS. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia, Phi Delta Kappa, and a member emeritus of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He also sang in the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and the Lexington (KY) Singers. During his years in the ministry, he served on various committees and boards in the Dioceses of Nebraska, Wyoming, and Indianapolis.
He was a lifelong avid photographer and worked in both the professional and semi-professional fields. He was a news photographer for the Muncie Newspapers from 1958-62 and was in charge of the darkroom at Warner Gear and at The Richmond Register in Richmond, KY.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Christine Moore Smith, daughter Tammy Smith Martin (Tony) of Lebanon, IN, son Greg, of Lexington, KY, nephews Jeff Moore (Jill) and John Moore, both of Pendleton, IN, grandnieces Jennifer Moore Givens (Keith) of Anderson, and Jessica S. Moore of Avon, great-grandnieces Madison Jo and Elsie C. Givens, and great grandnephew Corben Givens, all of Anderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth of Portland, IN, a niece Jo Ellen Moore, and his first wife, Barbara J. Lundy Smith.
Honorary pall bearers will be Greg Smith, Tony Martin, Jeff Moore, John Moore, and Keith Givens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the School of Music at Ball State University, or to your local animal shelter.
A memorial visitation will be held Monday November 28, 2022 from 1-3pm at Church of the Nativity, 7300 Lantern Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46256. A memorial service will begin there at 3pm. Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
