Gerald Gene “Gary” Carter, 75, of Indianapolis passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 29, 2018.
He was born on January 9, 1943 in Indianapolis to the late George Newton and Marguerite (Payne) Carter. Gary attended Lawrence Central High School where he excelled in athletics before his graduation in 1963. He joined the Army National Guard, serving from 1964 – 1965, followed by service in the USAF from 1965-1983. Gary joined the Army National Guard again, retiring in 1993. He spent his entire career working in the service of the United States Government. His last post was with Fort Benjamin Harrison in Building 1 as a mail clerk; a position he loved for 10 years. Gary suffered from many ailments, attributed to his time in Vietnam. He handled his illnesses with grace, and dignity and never wanted to be a burden on anyone. Gary was a selfless individual and a gentle soul. He served as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor and was always willing to sit and listen to the problems of others.
Gary was a loving husband, devoted father and constant provider for his family. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jill (Laherty) Carter; son, Jay Conquest; daughter, Vanya Conquest. Gary was a passionate supporter of the ASPCA and leaves behind his constant companions, Paris, Rupert, Ozzie, London, Spirit, Azreal, Tommy and Mittens. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary “Boomer” Carter.
At Gary’s request, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be given to the Muscular Dystrophy Family Foundation. Friends are invited to leave online condolences for the family at www.flannerbuchanan.com. Cremation services entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Geist.
